Pull Quotes Podcast

By Lidia Abraha and Michal Stein

Since the Ontario PC government announced the new “Student Choice Initiative” on January 17, the fate of student newspapers (and other student groups) is up in the air. Most student papers rely on ancillary fees in order to cover costs.

Campus newspapers do investigative, important work. They’re also the only media organizations critically examining and reporting on individual institutions. Last week, the Eyeopener broke a story about potential fund mismanagement by Ryerson Student Union executives. On the weekend, journalists at the Charlatan in Ottawa were first on the scene during a campus fire.

We spoke to journalists and editors from different student publications across Ontario about how the Student Choice Initiative might affect their newsrooms, and they tell us about the stories they broke that we may never have heard about if it wasn’t for campus journalism.
