In the sixth episode of this season’s Pull Quotes, Emma Gilchrist spoke with co-host Rahaf Farawi about her feature “Genetic Mapping“, published in Maisonneuve

This season’s podcast takes you behind the scenes of Canada’s top long-form stories. In this episode, Gilchrist talks about her journey to writing and publishing her first long-form personal feature—a piece she wrote in a week from a cabin in the woods.

“I just felt really empowered to claim my own story and to not worry so much about, you know, everybody else’s perspectives. But I was definitely like pretty nervous when it came out.”

In the interview, she talks about the experience of sharing a story that implicated many close people in her life. “I just felt really empowered to claim my own story and to not worry so much about, you know, everybody else’s perspectives. But I was definitely like pretty nervous when it came out.”

Gilchrist talks about how a lot of her feature was pulled from journal entries, adoption records, family trees, emails, and Facebook messages.

The interview has been edited for length and clarity.
